TITLE Access to Capital and Entrepreneurial Success: A Systematic Review of Funding Barriers, Investment Gaps, and Venture Outcomes
ABSTRACT Funding is a key determinant of the creation, survival and development of entrepreneurial enterprises. But not all entrepreneurs have equal opportunities in obtaining adequate financial resources, which may lead to funding barriers and investment gaps. This systematic review investigates the impact of various types of capital on entrepreneurs' success, focusing on credit, VC, angel investment and other sources of entrepreneurial financing. The review draws from secondary academic sources from Google Scholar, and integrates the current knowledge of the literature under five themes: access to finance and venture outcomes; funding barriers and credit constraints; inequalities in entrepreneurial finance; alternative investment mechanisms; financing, innovation and business growth. Financial resources can facilitate working capital, innovation, employment, market expansion, and business survival, as can restricted access limit investment and growth opportunities. It also points to the variation in financing environments among entrepreneurial segments, such as gender differences. The results indicate that there are many factors related to the affordability, timeliness, size and match of capital with business needs, that influence the success of entrepreneurs. The review ends with the conclusion that considering entrepreneurial success is not only a matter of access to capital, but also the overall context in which capital is obtained and used.
